History

Extenda was founded in 1982 based on the idea of POS functions controlled by software integrated with the replenishment systems. Until 1995 Extenda had a partnership with Nokia where we acted as subcontractor for POS SW.

In 1995 we developed the first version of Extenda Retail which was successfully supplied to fashion retailers in Sweden and by 1998 the largest food retailer in the Sweden, ICA (Ahold) chose Extenda for all their POS software needs. ICA today has a total of 2200 stores in Sweden, Norway and the Baltic countries, ranging from small convenient stores to hypermarkets. ICA selected Extenda for software and initially IBM and Wincor for hardware.

In 2002 a Sweden-based world leading global fashion retailer chose to implement Extenda. The customer selected Extenda for software and Fujitsu for hardware and global services. Today we have installations for this customer in 23 countries, in 2000 stores and 14000 POS. Extenda does second line support 24/365.

In 2003 Ahold chose Extenda to develop their new Java based POS application with an architecture based on SOA principles. Stakeholders were primarily ICA, Albert Heijn and Stop&Shop in the US.

In 2004 the Extenda Retail standard version was further developed as a Java based POS with features for food, fashion and general merchandise operations.

In 2005 Axfood, Sweden’s 2nd largest food retailer with 400 stores, chose to implement Extenda. Axfood has rolled out Extenda Retail POS, Self Scanning and Self Checkout systems. Axfood also runs a functional rich BO system developed by Extenda.

In 2008 ICA/Ahold decided to upgrade to Extenda Retail in their Swedish stores. Rollout of POS and Selfscan (PSS) is ongoing and Mobile POS implementation is planned. With 16000 Motorola terminals, ICA is the largest Motorola PSS customer in the world.

In 2009 Extenda Retail was choosen by 5 chains among one was Apoteket the Swedish Pharmacy.
